The top-of-the-line 550 features a new 360-horsepower, 4.8-liter V-8 that has 35 hp more than the outgoing 545 sedan, which held a 4.4-liter V-8.

Note the price is up quite a bit for the...5-Series.

...the predecessor...BMW 5-Series was a recommended buy of Consumer Reports magazine, and this year's J.D. Power and Associate Dependability Study of 3-year-old cars showed the BMW brand above the industry average.
Model ReviewsComparison
...roomier than previous models. Front passengers get a half-inch more shoulder and head room, but the improvement is more obvious in the back, where there's more than an inch more shoulder room and two inches more legroom. This increase in cabin space puts the 5 Series on much better footing with key competitors like the Mercedes E-Class, Audi A6, and Lexus GS.

...this latest generation is a much better 5 Series.

It's moved a bit upscale, so that means more money, too.

Measured by its...solid acceleration, the 5 Series is as good as it's ever been.
The BMW 5-series puts an emphasis on the driving experience. This mid-size luxury car remains a true sports sedan by delivering lively acceleration, precise handling and outstanding safety. The 550i is offered only as a rear-wheel drive sedan and is powered by a 360-hp 4.8-liter eight-cylinder engine. A six-speed manual is standard, while a six-speed automatic with or without paddle shifters is optional. Standard features include leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control with active micro-filtration, an AM/FM/CD stereo with 10 speakers, bi-xenon adaptive headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, six airbags and a rechargeable flashlight in the glovebox. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and six airbags, and front and rear parking sensors; while more advanced safety features such as a lane-departure warning system and night vision are optional. The 550i is unchanged for 2010.
